Chaotic start to the 2018 Campaign
Paul EmeryAfter months of meticulous preparation and planning for SR Legends bi-annual assault for PanPacs gold the big day finally arrived and with the team already fully on board with WhatsApp and 4000 messages later, what could go wrong? Well, at least everyone had their WHITE socks, but trying to co-ordinate getting 8 people into each van proved a step to far and eventually after a 20 minute delay and a couple of diversions everyone finally reached the ground although your intrepid reporter missed the start of the game and the schmozzle that preceded getting the starting 11 on the pitch. These finally were, Mick in goal, Daren, Nic, Graham, Tony, Frankie, Marshie, Goughie, Wardie, Dean & Steve H. Early possession was all Legends but from one of our own throw ins, Steve H passed back to sweeper Nic, who was bamboozled by the bounce and a joyful and errant Dunrooten striker nipped in on goal and coolly finished past Mick to open the scoring. Not the best of starts but we quickly settled and then played some controlled football in very hot conditions. A nice move from Frankie down the right released speedster Dean who slipped it to Wardie and a narrow offside decision resulted. We were back in this or so we thought. With numerous subs being the order of the day a drinks break was provided with everyone fighting for the shade under the bench! However on returning to the pitch a bouncing and animated roo was sighted in the form of Brownie who was gesticulating with his fingers (or trying to) that we only had 9 men on the park, enough said !!! Against a strong zone defence our 11 players then started to control the midfield through Marshy, “T”oughie & Rob K. Indeed after a dazzling run through the midfield Rob danced into their box skipped around two defenders and the keeper and then “shot” towards the empty net. He had used up so much energy in getting to this position that the shot trickled goalwards but was cleared by a Dunrooten defender. At the other end some timely challenges by Nic and a fine save by Mick were needed to keep the game tight but right on half time tragedy struck when a wayward shot bounced off Daren leaving Mick stranded and Legends with a 2-0 half time deficit. With multiple substitutions and Legends having to chase the game, Dunrooten sat back and comfortably mopped up anything high or long. With more time on the ball, Legends kept good possession and were the more dominant team. Some flair in all parts of the field was now on show. Firstly there was a sublime back flip from Tony in the centre of the park, then Darren fell over the ball before starting a 20 metre dribble down the right wing. Another good move from Graham to Maurice to Dean saw a cross land at Mario’s feet but his attempt was gathered by the keeper. The final few minutes saw Marshie press forward and from a resulting free kick Wardie saw a well placed left foot shot touched round the post by the keeper and that saw the end of the action and an opening 2-0 loss for Legends. In hindsight, we gifted them two early goals and perhaps need to be more ruthless in front of goal and more organised off it as chaos ensued as we tried to get everyone back home and Brownie temporarily misplacing his shorts with the keys for one of the cars in them. BMW Man of the Match – Nic who recovered after his early misdemeanour to play a fine match. Muppet Moment – Daren for falling over the ball.
