One That Got Away

John Moore

This report may not be entirely accurate as my memory is not great. I have trouble remembering how to get home let alone what happened during a game but here goes.

The game started a bit on the slow side as two sides felt each other. Endeavour Hills got a lot of early possession through the midfield, but weren’t able to really create much with City’s backline solid and the Gaffer’s tactics of blocking the centre of the park working. City were counter attacking when forcing a turn over or being released long by keeper Rick but were unable to break down the stacked Endeavour defence.

The breakthrough for City came from a cross from the left corner from the Gaffer. After a clever decoy run by the returning Catela, Harrison finished with a nice first time shot from close range. The game was developing into a bit of a midfield arm wrestle when a quick ball forward managed to get through City’s defence and Endeavour Hills player managed to get through one on one with keeper and scored. 1 -1 at half time.

The second half started much the same with City becoming a bit sloppy in possession. There were a few unforced errors and turn overs starting to creep in with maybe a bit of fatigue, but overall City still looked the more dangerous when they got it right. Eventually some good combinations down the left flank between Gideon, Andy and John managed to see a low hard cross parried by the Endeavour keeper and Steve was once again on the spot to slot the loose ball neatly away.

City looked to be in control for the next 15 minutes, but unfortunately with some poor man for man marking at a corner, Endeavour Hills managed a chance to scramble one across the line from a loose ball pin balling around the 6 yard box. 2-2.

The game started to open up more as time went on with both sides getting a bit stretched. However, City looked more likely to score on the break and a great chance came towards the end of the game with a quick break (well quick relative to our age). With Harrison making a good run down the right hand side of 18 yard area then cutting the ball back between defenders to me arriving in the middle unmarked. As usual I scuffed the shot but still nearly lobbed the keeper only for him to get a finger-tip onto the ball and push it over the bar.

Game finished 2-2. Maybe a fair result in a hard fought game but I think it was one we could have won with a bit cleaner use of the ball. Good even contribution from team with good running from Ray and Gideon, plenty of work in the midfield from Andy and Frank, and Paul and the Gaffer for the most part controlling the defence.

MMM Memorable moment of the match – Frank desperately crawling on all fours to try and head the ball after a surging run back to help the defence.

Muppet Moment of Match – Referee (yes the same one…) for giving a decision based on body language! First time I have ever heard of that.

BMW BoP Doncaster’s Best on Park – Paul Emery solid at the back as usual.
